NEW UPHOLSTERY
CONCEPTS
The trend for upholstered furniture is to have two,
three or more different fabrics on one piece of
furniture. This may be done with prints or wovens,
plaids, stripes or florals. For example you could have a
plaid on the skirt, arms and back. The cushions could be
out of a coordinating floral. The box of the cushion can
even be out of a coordinating stripe. Does this seems
odd? Check it out, it can work! Depending on the fabric,
this treatment can be formal or informal. I have seen it
look strange, but have also seen it look exciting.
BAKER'S DOZEN
DECORATING IDEAS
- Mix and match patterns: combine florals with
stripes, and chintz prints with wovens.
- Use solid piping with print fabrics on
upholstery, pillows, bed covers, window
treatments and table skirts. A table skirt is a
great addition to any room.
- Have slipcovers, draperies and decorative pillows
for different seasons. These can also be
laundered to keep up with creative children and
pets.
- Make full, fitted arm covers out of the same
fabric to protect armchairs and sofas used
everyday. A coordinated fabric would be fun too!
- Use contrasting patterns for the face and back of
cushions/pillows for quick change decorating.
- Dress up windows to become a simple room's
architectural features. Swags, poofs, trim and
large supply of interesting rods makes this easy.
- Line draperies so they hang properly; lining with
flannel interlining makes them look more
luxurious.
- Avoid sill-length curtains, extend draperies to
the floor or beyond so that they puddle.
- Make placemats and napkins to coordinate with
your kitchen window treatments.
- Use a contrasting fabric as a ruffle around the
bottom of a bed or table skirt.
- Complete your bed's new look with a headboard
slipcover. Another slipcover to be laundered.
- Make a doggy, kitty or puffy cushion to
coordinate with a room's fabrics.
- Eliminate some of the guess work with the
coordinated fabric collections available from all
of the top suppliers through Judith Clark Design.
